Leaving the west coast we drove over Arthurs Pass to the Canterbury region. Arthurs Pass itself was notable for both stunning scenery…
..and for being the home of the world’s only Alpine parrot, the rather large and cheeky Kea. It has a reputation for ripping bits off cars and vans. We didn’t witness this, but one did come up to eat crumbs off my plate.
We stopped to break the journey in Methven (a pleasant but unremarkable town) before making our way on to Lake Tekapo. There we walked up a very windy Mount John to get better views of the strangely blue water. There was a cool bench at the top, strangely facing away from the lake.
We stayed in an Airbnb owned by a pleasant Aussie who was a bit of a food nazi (vegan)… She made me feel bad about putting milk on my cereal in the morning!
