Wanaka is a lovely little town about an hour from Queenstown (if you are happy to drive over a windy mountain pass…a bit longer if you want relatively flat roads).

The town itself seems very affluent with street after street of modern “architect designed” houses with big picture windows and well maintained and stocked gardens.

It also has a lovely vineyard called Rippon, which is run organically and has vines running down to the lake.

Rippon Vineyard do a free wine tasting…they just ask for a donation that goes back into conservation.

For some reason there is also a much-photographed half-drowned willow tree in the lake.

Wanaka should be on every visitors’ list of places to stay.
